What begins as an investigation of song origins in Hamlet yields recommendations for contemporary practitioners of early modern English theater, specifically, how one might use historical research to supply audiences with either "materially authentic" or "sensibly authentic" music and performances. ![]() ![]() The second chapter anecdotally explores how artistic directors and actors have approached situations in which context cannot be historically replicated and it examines the types of compromises that must be made when working with early modern ballad allusions. ![]() Through this focus on intent, this author aims to provide today’s early modern English theater practitioners with a more complete understanding of the story and the characters. The first chapter attempts to identify the various ballad allusions in Shakespeare's Hamlet, not to replicate historical context, but to reconstruct Shakespeare's intentions in alluding to popular songs. The researcher also examines what has and has not worked for some modern practitioners when working with ballads from the early modern period. This thesis compares several possible music source texts with three early texts of Shakespeare’s Hamlet for textual similarities and dramatic function of music in the works. ![]()
